Preface for Book 12
TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS
PAGE COUNTY VIRGINIA
VOLUME II |
This instant volume contains 197 cemeteries, which were located in Page County, Virginia, where they were examined, surveyed, and the tombstone inscriptions were transcribed.
Most of these cemeteries were known as 'private', 'family', or 'farm type', as distinguished from Church or Community cemeteries, the latter usually have a lot more tombstones and are greater in area.
The name index consists of 10,000, more or less. A smaller supplemental name index follows on page 437, and contains names that 'fell through the cracks' during the collation process. The main index is recorded on pages 372 through 436.
Those using the name indexes of this volume are cautioned to search for variants of any surname that they are interested in, as a large percentage of the listed surnames are of Germanic origin, and the very early scribes recorded the names in many different ways, mostly phonetically, and thus corrupted many surnames, and the perpetuation of the incorrect orthography.
Any one particular name in the indexes may appear 'more than once' on any page of this volume.
Page county Virginia was erected in 1831 from Rockingham and Shenandoah counties of Virginia, Therefore prior to 1831 one must of necessity research the records of the courthouse at Harrisonburg, Virginia, and the courthouse at Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia, and older records in the courthouses of Frederick, Augusta, Orange, and Spotsylvania counties of Virginia.
