Preface for Book 11

Shenandoah County Virginia 1882 - 1915

This compilation consists of some 5,000 or more marriages listed chronologically between 1882 and 1915, who were married in Shenandoah County, Virginia. The brides and grooms, 10,000 or more, are printed in 'upper case' for easy identification. The names of the brides and grooms parents, 20,000 more or less, are listed in the marriage texts on pages 1 through 765 of this volume. Also listed are the ages of the bride and groom, occupation of the groom, places of birth, residences, place of marriage, marriage date, name of the marriage official, whether married-single-widowed-divorced, names of affiants, persons making oaths, guardians, witnesses, maiden names of the bride, and previous marriage surnames, also other miscellaneous data, and remarks by the court. Tombstone inscriptions for some 6,000 of the brides and grooms are listed as well as a detailed location of the cemetery that they are buried in. These tombstones were transcribed from nine (9) volumes of tombstone inscriptions for Shenandoah County, Virginia, and bordering counties including Rockingham, Page, Warren, and Frederick County, Virginia, as well as Hardy County West Virginia. These nine (9) tombstone inscription volumes representing some 900 surveyed cemeteries were previously published by the compilers of this work. All names appearing in this volume, some 55,000 are listed in the index on pages 813 through 1117. Names which failed the collation process 'fell through the cracks' are listed in a supplement index on pages 1118 through 1120. This volume contains a errata section on pages 766 through 812, which corrects some 800 transcription errors made by clerks/scribes in Shenandoah County, Virginia, and this errata section data supersedes marriage entries data on pages 1 through 98 of this volume. Refer to page 766 of this volume. The marriage texts on pages 1 through 765, and on pages 766 through 812, contain a plethora of added genealogy including the names of ancestors and descendents, and in many instances includes several generations of ancestors. Some genealogy has been added to this compilation by the compilers, and usually is added in parenthesis below the marriage item on pages 1 through 812. Any one particular name may appear more than once on any page of this volume. Each bride is listed twice in the name index first with her maiden name and lastly with her new married surname. Since this compilation pertains to Shenandoah County Virginia marriages from 1882-1915 forward, it is therefore proper to state that the marriages from 1850-1882 have previously been published by the compiler listed in paragraph three above, and are available. Also, Shenandoah County Virginia marriages from 1772-1850 were published in 1967 by Bernice Ashby, and printed by the Virginia Book Company, Berryville, Virginia.
